First online internship experience in Pakistan
‘An internship is a semester (fall, spring, summer) in duration, may or may not carry credit, may be paid or unpaid.’
Internships commonly represent a first step on the ladder towards a professional career in the most competitive sectors, including fashion, journalism, politics, law, finance, and the charity sector.
Because these areas are so competitive, employers are often able to offer internships as completely unpaid positions in Pakistan and some other countries.
For many professional careers there is now an expectation that graduates will go through an internship (or even several internships) before starting a full-time paid role. This has led to growing concern about the extent to which internships are paid, and the impact of unpaid internships on social mobility.
The persistent question is whether the internships should be paid, or unpaid. It appears likely that nonpaid internships will continue to be under the ‘microscope’.
The employer in Pakistan that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern and on occasion its operations may actually be encumbered and the intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship.
